Newman Historical Society

30th Anniversary

The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Newman Historical Society's inaugural meeting.  On March 9, 1995, a group of 10 historically minded Newman citizens gathered together at the Louis J. Newman Memorial Building to organize what would soon become the Newman Historical Society, it's purpose:  To preserve and promote the history and heritage of the City of Newman, CA.

The Society, which registered itself as a 501c Non-Profit organization upon its creation, initially set out to work with the City of Newman to become the new stewards of the City's museum, the former Newman (Carnegie) Library.  The museum, which heretofore had been sporadically manned and accessible to the public, would now be championed by the Society with volunteers to staff the edifice and curate its collection of historical artifacts.

In addition to providing support for the museum, the NHS has been an initiator of many community projects, chief among them was its work with the Nature Conservancy to arrange the move of an 1873 schoolhouse from the Orestimba foothills into Newman.  Refurbished over the course of several years by members, business and volunteers, the distinctive red schoolhouse is now a fully functional city facility.

As the Newman Historical Society celebrates its 30th anniversary, it is abundantly clear that its dedication to preserving the history and heritage of Newman has left a lasting impact on the community. Through tireless work and collaboration, the Society has ensured that the city's rich past remains a part of its future. As it moves forward into the next chapter, the Society continues to honor its founding mission, fostering a deep appreciation for the history that shapes the identity of this city.
