September 11th Time Capsule

Newman Honors Heroes and Victims of 9/11

Nearly 300 local residents, leaders, and dignitaries gathered on September 11th, 2002 to mark the one-year anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The somber ceremony served as both a tribute to the heroes and victims of that tragic day and a reflection on the sacrifices made by those who continue to protect the nation, including military personnel, police officers, and firefighters.

The crowd, which ranged from young children to senior citizens, gathered around the city park gazebo for the observance. The event featured speeches from local dignitaries, the dedication of a time capsule, a flag presentation, a bell salute in honor of the firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11, and a poignant bagpipe performance of "Amazing Grace."

Dr. Walter Simon Newman, great-grandson of the city’s founder, Walter Newman, played a key role in organizing the event and generously donated the time capsule to the city as part of the tribute.
