Celebrating 50 Years of Community and Connection: The Orestimba 50-Plus Club's Golden Anniversary

As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Orestimba 50-Plus Club, it’s incredible to reflect on how far this group has come since that first April meeting in 1975. The club, formed by a dedicated group of senior citizens from the Newman-Crows Landing School District, began with just sixty enthusiastic members and has since grown into a cornerstone of community life for residents 50 and older.

Looking back to that inaugural gathering in the Louis J. Newman Memorial Building, it’s clear that the vision of the club's founders, particularly Mrs. Paula Davis, was the spark that ignited a movement. The club was originally formed to offer social, educational, and recreational opportunities for seniors in the area. As Mrs. Davis herself said at the time, she was hopeful that the club would eventually host tours, guest speakers, and a variety of programs for its members — a vision that was quickly realized.

In those early days, the group was called the “Orestimba 50-Plus Club,” a name that still holds strong and resonates with all who have joined over the years. The first meeting saw Mrs. Davis selected as the temporary chairman and Mrs. Helen Moe elected as secretary. The enthusiasm and organization demonstrated at that meeting paved the way for the club’s structured growth, including the formation of a nominating committee with members Anthony Souza, Delia Powell, and Abbie Harmon. The group set the dues at just 25 cents per month, a modest start that would support the many activities to come.

What’s even more remarkable is that those early members — many of whom became Charter Members — laid the foundation for an enduring tradition of camaraderie and service. The club’s regular meetings, which started with twice-monthly gatherings, became a beloved fixture for members. In fact, the tradition of meeting each month continues to this day, keeping the spirit of those original gatherings alive.

Fast forward to today, and the Orestimba 50-Plus Club has grown into a vibrant and active organization.  Some who attended those first meetings are still members, and they proudly reflect on how the club has become a second family for them, offering a place to connect, share experiences, and continue learning.

Looking back on the club's early meetings, it’s clear that a lot has changed — but the essence of the Orestimba 50-Plus Club has remained constant: community, connection, and care for one another. We’re excited to celebrate 50 years of memories, friendships, and the continued growth of this remarkable group. Here's to the next 50 years!
